Talk to the experts!
We have many years experience of binding students' theses and dissertations to university and college specifications.
All you need to do is:
- bring in the number of copies you require binding (we don't have the facilities to print or photocopy here, but any of the well-known high street quickprinters will be able to help you) with the sheets in the correct order plus copies of any photographs etc. which need to be included.
- decide which method of binding is most appropriate (see below or discuss with the binder when you come in).
- let us know of any different specifications your university or college has (see below).
- come back one week later with cash or a cheque (sorry, we don't accept credit or debit cards) and collect the finished results of all your hard work!
For students at UCE and Aston we can even offer a collection and/or delivery service from/to the university at £5.00 per journey.
If you live outside the Birmingham area you may prefer to send us your printed sheets together with your cheque and we can post or courier the finished books back to you - please contact us for prices, lead times etc.
Binding methods & prices
Gluing ("Perfect binding")
This is the cheaper method and is suitable for books consisting only of paper (no plastic coated sheets, boards etc.). If mounted photographs are included you may need to consider having your books sewn - the binder will be happy to discuss the options with you.
Sewing
This is the stronger method and is ideal for books in daily use or including mounted photographs etc. Books are sewn in 3mm sections and then hand sewn onto tapes. This allows for the introduction of "guards" (sheets about 20mm wide) to compensate for the thickness of photographs or provide gaps anywhere in the book (eg to take the thickness of a cassette).

With either method we ask you to allow a full week (ie 5 working days) for binding - hand sewing is obviously a lengthy process and to ensure glued books remain flexible for many years to come it is essential to allow proper time for curing etc.
We also offer a wiro or plastic binding service:
- under 1 inch thick - first copy £15.00, every additional copy £2.00
- over 1 inch thick (plastic binding only) - first copy £16.00, every additional copy £4.00
General university and college specifications
In most cases the regulations are that submissions should be bound in a hardback case (glued or sewn) with sans serif gold lettering (as opposed to Roman style lettering) - name, degree and year reading downwards on the spine (7mm letter height) and title (5.5mm letter height) on the front cover. If your university or college has different requirements simply let us know.
The colours accepted vary, but we provide a full range of 11 different colours.
If you have any questions or want to know more just contact us and we will be happy to advise!
